The Gist
I'm Kim Nguyen, a web designer/developer, graphic designer, and illustrator based in Southern California. I've been working on websites on the front-end for over 20 years, with experience in both startup and traditional corporate environments.
I have a bachelor degree in business administration and a minor in advertising from Boston University's Questrom School of Business (formerly School of Management). Exposure to these fields has made it easier to gel with folks on both the business and creative ends of a venture by way of web tech. Like jelly in a PB sandwich, kind of. PB in a jelly sandwich?
Anyway, over the years I've gained experience in the following (among others):
- Front-end frameworks such as Nuxt, Ember, Angular, and React
- Adobe programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign (CS6 and above)
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Git
- Content management systems such as Hubspot and Contentful
- Atlassian services, including JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Trello
- Agile workflow
How I got into web development is a long and odd story, but these days I'm interested in creating smooth and visually pleasing web experiences. With that in mind, I primarily take cues from elegant layouts in various print publications I've collected over the years. I'm still a big fan of printed things in general because, try as we might, I don't think the tactile sensations of paper translate well to digital devices (but hey, I'm open to being wrong). Want to talk my ear off about paper weight, international sizing standards, and the properties of different types of finish? Have at ya girl.
In addition to dev work, I've done graphic design projects here and there, including menu/signage design for the now-defunct Chayo Eatery in Torrance, California. In 2020 I had the opportunity to work with the late adventurer and educator Pierre Odier, co-editing the 5th book in his travelogue series A Pebble in the Sand, focused on Burma/Myanmar.
